How to use it + an example

How to use it

  1. Say what it is for, hand it over, and do not show how to use it.
  2. Note what they do with it, and every place it goes wrong for them.
  3. Add what they said in their own words, then pair two things from the test and write the one change they point to.

Example

Testing a cardboard desk tidy with a grandparent, a student sees the pens go in the wide slot meant for a phone, hears "where does my phone go?", and decides to label the slots and move the phone slot to the front.

When to use it: When there is something to try, even a rough model, and the person it is for (or another real person of the same kind) can try it (MYP Design Criterion D).

Test: Try it. Find what breaks. Fix it.

How to run the test

  • Say what it is for. Do not show them how to use it.
  • Stay quiet while they try. Help only if they cannot go on.
  • Do not defend it. Where it goes wrong is what you came to see.

Before you start

  • Ask the person first, and tell them what it is for.
  • Write who they are, not their name: "a Year 3 student", not "Sam".
  • No photos of faces. Photograph hands, objects and places only.

Look back. What did they do that you did not expect?
